Environmental organizations have raised the alarm after the approval of the Bases Law, which enables the execution of mega-mining projects. Experts in the field warn about the serious impacts that this mining industry will bring, including acid drainage and contamination with chemicals that will destroy any possibility of future sustainable and human development.
The Ecologist Organization Piuke and El Frutillar in Bariloche have denounced that the governor of Río Negro, Alberto Weretilneck, is promoting the expansion of mining companies in the territories. This approval has caused great concern among the local population, including Mapuche Tehuelche communities and rural residents, who fear the devastating consequences it will have on the regional ecosystem.
The authorization of mega-mining projects without the proper social license and disregard for water protection in a region already scarce in this vital resource, has generated rejection from environmental defenders. Additionally, there is concern about the risk of accidents in tailings dams and criticism of the lack of industrialization plans that benefit local communities.
Environmental organizations emphasize the importance of autonomous and horizontal organization to defend territories from the irresponsible expansion of mega-mining. It is stressed that it is the duty of current generations to protect the environment for future generations and not allow corporations to threaten the sustainability of life in the region.
